We were delighted to welcome Revd Alan Perry to our Sunday morning Eucharist Service. He was to be our visiting preacher and we were all looking forward to hearing his words.
Revd Alan Perry is the Head Teacher of St Edward’s CE School and Sixth Form College in Romford where our own vicar Carolyn, is a chaplain. He arrived to applause from the congregation after arriving at the very last moment just as the service was about to start without him. (tom-tom’s fault of course) However, we soon calmed down ready to enjoy the service.
As our visiting preacher, Revd Alan had a difficult subject to talk to us about as our gospel reading was of the rich, young man to whom Jesus told ‘Give all you have to the poor.’ A difficult story to understand and decipher, nevertheless, Revd Alan said that he thought Jesus was advising both him and us not to depend so much on money, rather to look to God for fulfilment. He then went on to tell us a story of a rag and bone man who went along asking people to give him their old trouble and he would exchange it for something new. We listened intently as the story unfolded; concluding with the rag and bone man being so weighted down with other peoples problems that he died. Familiar story eh? ‘Give me your old, and I will give you my new!’
I can’t truthfully say that I remember every word of the story but, it will be a very long time before I will forget the story told so compassionately yet with such power, of the rag and bone man who promises that if we lay our burdens on him, he will give us hope anew! ‘Give me your burden, and I will give you new life!’
